Configuring DHCP allows you to forget once and for all about the manual configuration of the local network, because, having correctly configured the protocol, it will do all the configuration work for the user. In addition, the user will no longer have to enter IP addresses on each personal computer or laptop separately.
Allow DHCP Access on the Router

Configure network adapters via PC or laptop

What is DHCP?

All modern routers in their functionality have a built-in DHCP service. If it is configured and enabled, you do not need to separately configure the network connection on a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone. For wireless devices, you just need to turn on Wi-Fi, find your own in the list of wireless networks and enter the password to connect to it. If the connection to the network is via a cable, it is enough that it is connected to the network card of your computer.
When a new device appears on the network, the DHCP service checks the list of available IP addresses and assigns one of them to it. In this case, duplication of addresses is excluded.
How to configure DHCP
By default, the DHCP service on routers is already configured. It is enough to connect the client device via Wi-Fi or a cable and it will be automatically assigned an IP address. However, you may need to change the DHCP settings, disable or enable it. Consider the configuration of DHCP on the example of a TP-link router. For other routers, the algorithm will be exactly the same.
We go into the web interface of the router and in the menu on the right we see the item “DHCP” and the sub-item “DHCP Settings”. On the tab that opens, you can change the default settings. You can also enable or disable the DHCP service here.
For the DHCP service, the range of IP addresses that must be entered in the corresponding fields must be specified. The starting IP address is the first address in the range, and the ending IP address is the last. By default, the IP range is from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199. But you can register, for example, from 10.1.1.1 to 10.1.1.99. You can generally specify a range within two to three addresses, for example, by the number of client devices.
The next required item is the validity period of the address in minutes. This is the time for which a specific IP can be assigned to a specific device. After it expires, the IP can be changed or assigned to another device.
The remaining items are optional; DHCP itself will indicate the necessary parameters for client devices. However, these parameters can be set manually if desired.
The main gateway is the IP address of the router - the channel through which traffic is exchanged with the Internet. It is usually indicated if access to the Internet is through an access point with a different address. But if your network has only one router and it is connected to the Internet directly, you do not need to register anything here.
The default domain is the domain name of your network. In small networks where a small number of client devices are used, it does not make sense to configure it.
The preferred and alternate DNS server is usually specified by the provider. But you can enter Google’s public DNS servers here - 126.96.36.199 and 188.8.131.52. This, for example, helps to solve problems with access to the Internet - it happens that the DNS providers are buggy, there is a connection, but the pages do not open. Also, this often allows you to bypass blocking access to certain resources, for example, torrents.
After making changes, click the "Save" button to apply the new settings.
In order for your network to start working with new parameters, the router must be rebooted.
For client devices to be able to connect to the DHCP service, they should have the option “Obtain an IP address automatically” in the network connection settings.
How to enable DHCP
If the DHCP service on your router is disabled, you can enable it here, in the DHCP menu - DHCP settings. To do this, put a tick in the "Enable" and click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page. The service will be started. If this does not happen, reboot the router.
How to turn off DHCP
If you do not need DHCP service, when, for example, you decide to manually register IP for all your devices, you can disable it in the same way. Go to the tab "DHCP Settings" and put a tick in the "Disable". Save the settings. Client devices will no longer be able to automatically obtain IP addresses when connected to your network.
List of clients
In order to see which devices are currently connected to your DHCP service, in the “DHCP” menu item of your router’s web interface, go to the “DHCP Client List” sub-item. Here you will see a table with information about current connections.
ID - means serial number.
The customer name is the name of the device, if assigned to it.
MAC address - accordingly, the MAC address of this device.
Assigned IP - The address that was assigned to the device by the DHCP server.
Validity period - accordingly, the remaining time during which this address will be valid.
If you have concerns that someone else has connected to your network, you can check the information about connected devices on this tab at any time. In order to update the current information, click the "Update" button. The list of connected devices will be updated.
DHCP provides IP addresses to client devices for a specific period of time. After that, the address can be changed. Also, connecting to the network, each computer or smartphone will receive a new address each time. And the address that he used earlier can be provided to another device. Typically, the change of address is invisible to the user and does not affect the operation of the network. However, it may be necessary to make sure that the IP address of a particular computer does not change. This may be relevant if you are playing games on the local network or some specific functions are assigned to this computer that will work only with a static IP.
There is a simple way to solve this problem using DHCP - to reserve an IP address for a specific computer.
To do this, go to the "Address Reservation" sub-item of the "DHCP" menu item. If you have previously reserved addresses, a list of devices will be available here, which can be edited as needed. If not, click the "Add" button.
In the window that opens, you need to enter the MAC address of the device and the IP that will be reserved for it.
Here you can enable or disable address reservation for this device by changing the corresponding parameter in the Status item.
After entering the parameters, click the "Save" button. Now this device will always receive only this IP address when connected to the network.
After saving the parameters, you will return to the previous window. The list of devices will now show the one you just added. By clicking “Change”, you can edit the address reservation settings. And using the “Delete” item, remove the device from the list and cancel the reservation.
Using the “Enable All”, “Disable All” and “Delete All” buttons, you can manage the address reservation for all devices from the list.
To apply the changes made, you will need to restart the router. A reminder will appear at the bottom of the window.
Activation of the automatic configuration protocol on the router.
As a rule, by default this option is enabled on a network device, but for various reasons, for some users it is not in an active state. I will show how to enable DHCP on the ASUS and TP-Link routers, and by analogy you can enable the protocol for dynamically configuring the node on any other model from any manufacturer. The principle on all devices is the same, only the interface shell is different.
ASUS. After activation in the interface, go to the "Local Area Network" section on the "DHCP Server" tab and in the "Enable DHCP Server" item, turn the switch to the "Yes" position. On the same page, you can specify the start and end pool of IP addresses. In fact, this is a range of unique network addresses, one of which the router will assign to the device when connected to it.
In order to each time the device is connected (computer, TV, smartphone ...) to the local network, the router assigns it the same network address, you need to bind the IP address to the MAC address of the client (the procedure for assigning a static IP is described in detail). Thus, the tablet, laptop and other devices in the home or office network will have its own permanent network address, and you are guaranteed to avoid any kind of conflict.
For example, to give a laptop a permanent IP address, you first need to find out the MAC address of the computer, and then in the settings activate the option “Enable destinations manually” and select this device from the drop-down list. In the next field, enter the desired free IP from the range and click the add button. Changes will take effect after clicking the “Apply” button and rebooting. As you can see, I have four clients receiving a permanent IP.
TP-LINK. After entering the network device interface, go to the “DHCP” tab -> “DHCP Settings” (Settings). On this page you can enable the DHCP server and set the start and end IP addresses in the fields of the same name for the local network. I draw your attention to the fact that on the tab “Network” - “Local Area Network” (LAN) the current IP address of the router is indicated, therefore, it cannot assign it to any other device.
Therefore, the initial IP should be set taking into account the network node of the router and assign the next one after it. For example, if it costs 192.168.1.1, then the starting IP address can be 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3 or, as in my case, 192.168.1.100. All other settings are optional, but if necessary, you can reduce the validity period of the address.
At the end of the term, the device to which the IP was issued will ask him to renew. The dialog is invisible to you, and if there are a lot of clients on the network, then in this case the option is relevant, since it does not clog the table. You can view the validity period of the address, name, MAC and IP address in the list of clients connected to the network (DHCP Clients List). If there are 3 to 10 clients on the local network, then leave everything as default or set the maximum value (2880 minutes).
On the router, it is possible to fasten the client a permanent IP address. Thus, when connected to a network, the network device will issue the same IP to the device. To do this, go to the "Address Reservation" tab and click the "Add New" button. Write down the MAC address of the device, set a free IP address from the available range. In the "Status" drop-down list, select "Enable" and click the "Update" button. All settings will take effect after rebooting the router.
After you enable the DHCP server on the router, make sure that all clients (computer, TV, set-top box ...) in the settings have the status “Obtain an IP address automatically”. Until!

IPv4 Address Exclusion
A router acting as a DHCP server assigns all IPv4 addresses in a range (pool) if it is not configured to exclude specific addresses. Typically, some IP addresses from a pool belong to network devices, such as routers, servers, or printers that require static addresses, so these addresses should not be assigned to other devices. To exclude them, use the command ip dhcp excluded-address. Using this command, you can exclude both a single address and a range of addresses by specifying the first and last from it.
Consider an example in which we exclude from the distribution the address 192.168.1.254 and the addresses from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.9
Setting up a DHCP pool
Configuring a DHCP server includes determining the pool of addresses to be distributed. To create a pool, use the command ip dhcp pool pool_name. After that, you must enter two required commands - network network_address / prefix_length to indicate the network from which addresses will be distributed and default-routerdefault_gateway to specify the default gateway (up to 8 addresses can be entered).
You can also use additional commands - for example, specify the DNS server (command dns-server address), domain name (command domain-name domain), NetBIOS WINS server (command netbios-name-server address), as well as the lease time of the address (team lease number of days_hours_minutes, days are indicated first, then hours after a space, and then minutes). By default, the rental time is set to 1 day.
To check, you can use the command show ip dhcp binding, which shows a list of all IP addresses and their associated MAC addresses that were issued by the DHCP server. There is also a team show ip dhcp server statisticsusing which you can see the statistics of the DHCP server, including information about sent and received DHCP messages. Well, if the client is a Windows PC, then the information can be viewed through the command line by entering the command ipconfig / all, and for Linux users, the command is suitable ifconfig.
DHCP Relay (DHCP Relay)
In a complex hierarchical network, servers are usually not on the same network as the clients. As a result, if the DHCP server is on a different network, then requests from clients will not be able to reach it, since routers do not forward broadcast messages. To solve this problem you need to use the command ip helper-address DHCP server_addresswhich must be entered on the router in interface configuration mode so that it redirects broadcast messages from DHCP clients in the form of unicast to a DHCP server located on another network.
