Bass players endure a lot of ridicule for their musical career - then we can’t figure it out in 6 strings, then we all have the same sound, or something else. But no matter how much bile is poured on us, you and I know that not a single band can do without bass. Without a guitar - easily, without drums - is also not a problem, but without a bass - no.
The uniqueness of the bass guitar (and double bass) lies in the fact that it is the link between harmony and rhythm, or, in other words, between melody and groove. Being in the golden middle of the musical stream, the bass performs an accompanying function for all instruments. For example, it is extremely important to play along with the drummer, but do not hammer one note all the way, but at the right time play a beautiful phrase that correctly emphasizes the melody of the composition. It is this combination that is the cornerstone of a good bass player in a team.
If you are already a practicing bass player or just about to pick up a “paddle,” we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the following ways to improve the quality of your game.
1. Plan a lesson
Do not sit down at the tool just like that - you will waste time in vain. You must have a clear goal for each lesson. For example, today I study arpeggios in different positions, tomorrow I play two-octave scales, and the day after tomorrow I play to the accompaniment. Make plans for the week, work hard every day, and within a month your band-mates will be pleasantly surprised at your progress.
2. Play with the metronome
Like it or not, the bass player should be “crisp and even.” Each lesson should begin and end with the sound of a metronome. Start learning the exercise or play at a slow pace, gradually accelerating. Remember, if you can play slowly, you can play fast.
3. Find a teacher
Sign up to a music school or go to a teacher - this will instantly improve your workflow and you will quickly reach a whole new level. An experienced teacher will be able to distinguish between your strengths and weaknesses, will help if you are stuck in mastering new material. In addition, such classes bring additional motivation - unprepared for a lesson to go ashamed.
4. Make music out of technology
Of course, scales are “our everything”, but when learning another cool trick, try to revive the exercise by turning it into music. If you master, for example, slap, use it in the context of a melody or part that you know well. Thus, you not only master the theory, but immediately apply the technique in practice.
5. Learn the melody of the composition
Of course, it is easier to master the bass part directly, but in order to improve the quality of your performance and, importantly, your thinking, you must be able to play the melody of the song. The method is quite simple - take your favorite theme and try to “remove” its melody. It is not worthwhile from your first attempts to expect an ideal result, at first quite small. Studying all aspects of the composition will give you a complete picture of the music you play and allow you to look at your game from a different perspective.
6. Practice with the radio
The bass guitar gives the musician a unique opportunity to play “on the ball”. “On the ball,” of course, playing badly, but sometimes there are situations when it is necessary. For example, you go to the tavern scene, and they order a song from the audience that only you do not know from the team. It doesn’t matter, a ball comes to the rescue. You are told the chords, the approximate structure, and chased. And where is the radio? Despite the fact that after just a few lessons you will realize how similar and homogeneous modern rock and pop music are in their structure. During the lessons “under the radio”, you will learn to predict the development of the song and make simple, but effective parts on the go.
7. Scrub your sound
All extraneous noise and overtones should be eliminated in the bud. If in at least in some position on the neck you hear how the strings beat against the frets of the fret - adjust the height of the strings. The tool must be tuned in and out. Also remember that it is necessary to muffle the open fourth and third strings, otherwise the characteristic hum during the game cannot be avoided.
8. Work on sound production
Your game should be smooth, without jerking and “sloppy”. If you can’t play a game without trash, simplify it - it’s too tough for you yet, but it’s difficult to play. Work on improving the technique of the left hand, do coordination exercises. If you play with your fingers (right hand), make sure that your move is smooth. This also applies to the mediator.
9. Find your style
You are unlikely to become the second Wooten or Flea. And who needs it if there is an original? Of course, no one forbids using their tricks, but it is much cooler to find your “I” in playing an instrument. The bass guitar is very young, and the musicians have not yet studied all its features and subtleties. There are still a lot of discoveries ahead, and perhaps it is up to you to find a radically new approach to the instrument, as the great Jaco Pastorius did in his time.
That's all. Long-lasting strings and cute fans for you! See you later!

What is a bass guitar
Playing the bass from scratch is essentially learning how to play the double bass, with the caveat that the double bass lacks frets and learning to play it will be more difficult.
This instrument has 4 strings as standard, as is the case with ukulele. But in this case it will be low-sounding 4 strings.
There are also various 5, 6 string instrument variations and even more exotic variations.
If playing the ukulele is easier than playing the guitar, due to the reduced number of strings and notes on the fretboard, then playing the bass guitar from scratch is not such an easy task. At a minimum, the level of difficulty in learning will be the same as on an electric guitar.
Why you should become a bass player and not an ordinary guitarist
Usually everyone wants to master the electric guitar in order to make cool solos and to be a noticeable leader of the group, determining its sound. This is not quite the right look at the modern musical collective.
In fact, it is the bass parts that determine the sound lines of a musical group. not guitar riffs (yes, they will undoubtedly make your sound memorable, but it’s decoration and variety, not the foundation).
Five reasons to become a bass player
- Learning to play the bass from scratch is no more difficult than learning to play the guitar.
- The basics of the bass guitar will allow you to easily master the electric guitar later on if you wish.
- Your bass guitar tutor will most likely have more qualifications than a regular guitar tutor because of the lack of a large number of amateur musicians in this niche.
- Modern playing techniques allow you to make solos more complex than for electric guitars.
- There is a shortage of cool bass guitarists in the market. If you master this tool you will be welcome in any group.
Bass lessons from scratch
In order for the lessons of playing the bass guitar from scratch to take place with the maximum benefit for the beginner, the teacher will each time work out with you the technique that you are currently teaching. Also, for each new lesson you will receive a new homework at home to regularly improve your level of play.
The first lessons of playing bass for beginners may seem difficult, since stretching your fingers and inability to keep the rhythm at first will interfere with rapid progress. However, hard training at home and regular practice with a tutor will allow you to reach a qualitatively new level of ownership of the instrument within 2 months.
