The first food bank was created in the US in Phoenix in 1967. Its creator was John van Hengel. Food banks quickly spread around the world. The first European Food Bank was established in 1983 in France. Now Food banks operate in 17 countries in Europe. The Global Network of Food Banks, which includes 34 countries, operates. The first Russian food bank, the Rus Food Fund, was created in 2012, and in 2013, it became a member of the Global Food Banking Network.
