Features mother of pearl paint
In the whole variety of coatings, it is difficult to remember the advantages, disadvantages, properties of certain solutions, so the question often arises, pearl color - which one? Compared to the market value of other dye formulations, nacre is considered an expensive paint. This is caused by a number of specific symptoms:
The original flickering effect is the main difference between mother of pearl and competitors.
Reliable protection against small chips and scratches. Thanks to the additional varnish coating, the surface of the car is shockproof, but only to some extent.
Good heat resistance is ensured by multi-layer application of paint over the entire surface of the machine. The procedure is carried out using paint with a temperature identical to the heating of the body. This is an important point in the processing of the car, because with an unequal temperature range, the result will not be the highest quality.
Painting with mother of pearl is relevant in certain weather conditions and for car owners who take care of their cars. The paint does not have wide protective properties, such as hammer or polymer, therefore, it is easily damaged from strong shock and temperature changes.
There are several methods for applying pearlescent paint. The most common is a consistent color with enhanced iridescent shade. An additional varnish provides a brighter shine.
Experienced car owners or those who turn to a car service, can choose the second option for painting - a mixture of several colored pastes with pearl pigment. It is important here not to exceed the concentration of an ingredient.
The rich palette of pearlescent colors has rich bright and pastel colors. No additional textures and frills are needed to make the car more noticeable. An important advantage is that you can prepare an exclusive coloring composition by mixing 2-3 pearlescent colors.
Mother of pearl painting steps
Pearl color is considered to be elite in the automotive sector, which is why products painted with this shade are in great demand and have a high price. Black mother of pearl is widely popular. The painting process is complex and requires patience and care:
The temperature of the spray booth and the vehicle should be the same. This will ensure better adhesion of the paint to the surface of the machine and even distribution of color. The part to be painted must be cleaned and degreased. If necessary, the cracks need to be filled with soil and polished to zero. Mother of pearl is very similar to gloss, so any irregularities are very noticeable. As soon as the surface is ready for painting, you can begin to apply the substrate.
The gap between cleaning and the first layer should not be much time. The faster the application of the substrate begins, the better. The shade of the substrate should match the base.
The base layer is the main pearlescent paint, which must be applied in 2-3 layers, not counting the varnish. The composition should be diluted with a solvent so that the mass is moderately flowing. The best option is 2: 1. Painting is carried out using a spray gun. The first coat dries quickly, after 30 minutes you can apply the next. The paint from the puller must be poured into a clean container and the solvent added in the same ratio. It is enough to paint the car in 2 layers and go to the varnish coating.
The first varnish coat must be applied with a minimum amount of solvent, the second - as described in the instructions. The pearlescent varnish should dry and the solvent evaporate. It is enough to wait 30 minutes before reapplying the fixing layer.
Technology for producing pearlescent effect
In general, pearlescent paint is produced using approximately the same technologies as metallic paint. However, the smallest particles of metal give the unusual brilliance, but the smallest particles of mica.
The difference is that the mica is translucent. If metal simply reflects light, according to optical laws, then mica does not only reflect it. Rather, it reflects, but also from the outer edge, and from the inner, where it passed through the thickness of the material. It is from this that a color change occurs, all according to the laws of physics.
After all, light is an electromagnetic wave, and when the reflected rays are added out of phase, a peculiar picture is obtained, with many different wavelengths, and therefore with many color shades. But painting a car with mother-of-pearl is not as simple as it initially seems. Unless, of course, if you take into account a number of nuances, but if you take into account ...
The composition of the layers of the paint layer
In general, two main components are used - this is paint and varnish. Much similar to working with a “metallic”, but there are a number of differences. So you need several layers of varnish to get the effect of depth. And the layers of varnish themselves will differ, and in composition.
In addition, the paint is not so easy to apply - because it is necessary to achieve the symmetry of the reflections. Those. color transfusions should go symmetrically to the car body. Consider how to achieve this.
What materials will be required:
- Base paint,
- Special pearlescent pigments,
There are already mixed formulations, but it is better to purchase them separately, which will achieve the maximum, and most importantly the desired effect. Only the components must be of the same manufacturer, otherwise a chemical conflict may occur. It can be expressed right away - the paint simply curls up, and maybe later (for example - in a year the layers will begin to crumble). Therefore, saving is not appropriate here.
Painting a car with mother of pearl, the process itself
First of all, the element itself is needed, which is subject to staining. Moreover, prepared. Those. a car, or part of it (door, wing, etc.). Prepared - meaning clean and straightened, completely ready for paint work. Desirably coated with a special primer - i.e. not transport (with which parts come in the form of spare parts - it must be removed), but with a paint intended.
In addition to what you need to have:
- High-quality spray gun - for applying paint layers,
- Compressor creating a smooth air flow, without ripple and with filtered air,
- A set of painting materials (solvent, paint, varnish and pigments).
A special dust-free room, i.e. spray booth. Here, often the enthusiasm of garage craftsmen runs low, but do not panic. It is simple to make a dust-free room from the garage - it is enough to do a wet cleaning and organize the supply ventilation, with filtering the incoming air.
In addition, painting a car with mother of pearl adds another requirement to the room - temperature control is required. The positive temperature in the room is important, moreover, uniform throughout the volume. But in a garage environment and this is quite possible to do.
Apply pearlescent paint
First apply a coloring layer. It is necessary to add pearlescent pigment and dilute in appropriate proportions. It is also necessary to dilute the resulting mixture with a solvent, and for the conditions of the garage it is necessary to make more “dry”. Those. if a 1: 1 dilution is usually used, then two parts of the paint should be used, per part of the solvent.
Work with a spray gun is laid already different and clearer than even when using the “metallic”. The gun must always be kept at an equal distance from the surface, and movements should be made only in one plane, one direction and at the same speed.
Another important nuance when painting a car with mother of pearl is the temperature of the paint, solvent, car and air should be one. With a temperature difference, the nature of the gloss changes. Therefore, if the front is warm and the back is cold, then uniformity cannot be achieved. The same applies to temperature differences between other components.
Apply paint in two layers. Moreover, the first is very different from the second - it is applied at a greater distance, so that it lies in a kind of small grains (i.e. it does not completely wet the surface). After application, let the layer dry for 20 minutes. In addition, you should be careful not to touch the dried layer, however, as well as not dry. Here, not only the probability of damage to the layer, but also the notorious fingerprints. They must not be allowed.
Then a second coat of paint is applied, but already so that it turns out to be “wet”. Those. paint is diluted so that more solvent is obtained, and the gun itself must be kept, although not closer to the painted surface, but not much. Ideally, a little further than using plain paint.
Now the paint layer is ready, you can start varnishing. Pigment is also added to the varnish, but only in the first two layers, and in a decreasing proportion, and much less than in the paint.
Varnishing is done in several layers, more precisely in three. The first is done similarly to the first spray paint - dry, with a large distance from the surface to the gun.
The second is already wetter, containing less pigment. And the third one is completely without pigment, according to standard technology - it is protective.
Between the application of all layers it is necessary to maintain a pause of about 20 minutes. It is impossible to interrupt the process until it is completed; therefore, it is immediately necessary to stock up on a sufficient amount of time. At the end, it is necessary to leave the car for at least a day, so that the paint more or less dries.
Only after this painting the car with mother of pearl is completed, and you can evaluate the result.

You need to prepare the body in the same way as for ordinary painting. You can deal with this issue in detail on our website. Preparation consists in high-quality cleaning of the body, grinding, degreasing. If the current paint layer has cracks or depressions, then you need to fix this before painting with a primer. Most motorists are familiar with this process of chores in the house, in the office or in the apartment.
It is advisable to carry out grinding with a grinding machine, because the work will be ready faster, and the chance that you will miss some section is minimal. This list of work should be carried out in a clean and dry room, preferably with ventilation. Protective elements in the form of gloves, long-sleeved clothing are not just desirable, but necessary, as mother-of-pearl should not get into the skin.
You can apply nacre to the car body in several ways. Probably the most common method is to paint the body with a consistent increase in the iridescent effect. An additional coat of varnish enhances the radiance. The driver acquires a paste of a certain color already with mother of pearl. For versed people, another method is suitable - mixing pearlescent pigment with several pastes. It looks like an alchemical experiment, but the driver can prepare the original paint by mixing several colors.
If you want to take a chance, then follow the second path. From ready-made paints with mother of pearl, we recommend the following colors:
- Coarse red,
- Golden, silver - in these colors usually there is a rainbow effect,
- White with a rainbow effect.
How to paint a car
For painting, not taking into account the preparation, we will need a ready-made composition, an airbrush, varnish, a substrate and, of course, a solvent.
For those who are going to try their luck in self-production, we recommend purchasing pastes for cars of one company. After all, the compositions, depending on the manufacturer, are different, so mixing them will lead to spoilage of the entire paint material. The result of such an unsuccessful experiment is cracks and swelling on a car body.
So, we have at hand all the necessary materials, an adjusted and tuned airbrush, mixture. Lastly, check the body for dirt or rags from rags - this should not be. You can speed up the drying process of a car after degreasing with an industrial hair dryer. We turn to painting:
- Try to ensure that the paint in its temperature approximately coincides with the surface of the body. This correspondence will provide better adhesion of the paintwork material to the metal and the previous layer. The surface must be polished, as they say, to zero, because the pearlescent pigment resembles gloss, which means that the defects will also be clearly visible.
- The gap between the first layer and cleaning should not be large. The shade of the substrate should correspond to the base - the faster it is applied, the better for the body.
- The main pearlescent paint is applied in two or three layers. The varnish is already on top of these layers. The paint should be diluted with a solvent - check the fluidity of the mass when making a new portion of paint. Usually two layers of pearlescent paint are enough, after which it is already possible to start varnishing your work. Do not forget to wait for solidification.
- Depending on the chosen varnish, you will need to make two layers. Read the instructions - there this information is always present. But the iron rule is to apply the first varnish coat with a minimum amount of solvent. You should wait until the varnish dries and the solvent evaporates - usually this takes 30-40 minutes, then a fixing layer is applied.
Pearlescent paint is more capricious than usual, so you need to approach this work as seriously as possible. But do not be surprised if, after a good downpour, stains will appear on the new paintwork - you have to pay for beauty, especially white paint. This is perhaps the only negative. Plus - it's originality and beauty, which is rarely seen on the road. Do not forget about the temperature of the spray booth and the body. Carefully read the instructions that the pearl paint contains. And, of course, do not forget about protective ammunition.

What is pearlescent paint?
The secret of pearl effect paint is quite simple. It lies in a special filler, which is small particles of mica. These particles have the shape of a prism, which not only reflects the light, but also transmits it, refracts and reflects in a different color of the light spectrum. The presence in a paint with a pearlescent effect of a sufficient number of such particles also provide shimmering shades.
The technology of painting a car in mother of pearl has other features, without which the effect will be either incomplete or completely absent. These features include the preparation of the room and the surface of the car, the technology of applying paint and varnish. All these nuances are described in more detail below in stages, and they can also be viewed on the corresponding video.
The requirements for a room for painting with a pearl effect are very high. In addition to the standard rules, there are some features. First of all, it is cleanliness and absence of the slightest dust. This can only be achieved in special spray booths equipped with filtration systems for the air supplied from the outside.
The lighting of the paint room must also be treated with special responsibility. After all, with improper or insufficient supply of light, glare and shadows will appear on the surface, which in no way will contribute to the quality work of the painter. Lighting should be moderately bright, well diffused and surround.
One of the most important aspects when painting with a pearlescent effect is temperature. And this parameter concerns not only air. This should also include the temperature of the painted surface and the applied material.
That is, before painting the car must withstand enough time in a box with a certain temperature for the equation of indicators. The same goes for paint and varnish.
Tools and Supplies Required
The toolbox is quite standard:
- sandpaper and nozzles on the machine,
- spray gun
- pigment paint
Any painting begins with surface preparation. When painting with the effect of nacre, this requirement is especially relevant. On the quality of the prepared surface, the final result of painting with nacre largely depends.
At this stage, the old coating, traces of corrosion and other defects on the metal are removed. The work is carried out by a grinding machine and sandpaper. It is desirable to carry out the cleaning process in the wrong room where the painting will be carried out. This will make it easier to ensure a clean and dust free environment. The final step will be the application of putty and the alignment of damaged areas of the body.
The primer is applied in the traditional way, but special attention should be paid to the company of the manufacturer of the soil. Ideally, the primer should be of the same brand as the paint. So you can guarantee that the materials do not come into conflict with each other. To familiarize yourself with the priming process, you can watch a video on the topic.
The primer for pearlescent paint is applied in two layers, the first of which should not be too thick. Then the entire surface is dried and matted, the formed defects are removed. The second layer of soil is applied more carefully, again everything is dried and checked for errors.
The most basic and technically difficult stage is the application of paint. Painting with mother of pearl is carried out in several stages. Their number depends on the desired result, the shade of paint and other nuances. All this can be studied by watching the corresponding video.
If the car is painted in mother of pearl in the most standard way, then painting is carried out in two stages. At the first stage, the surface of the body is covered with base paint, which is applied in two layers. The first of them should be applied with a thicker composition and from a greater distance. After the first layer has dried, a second layer of base paint is applied. The whole result depends on the quality of this layer, it is applied from the usual distance, using standard consistency paint.
After applying the base, it is very important to dry the coating properly. This is done so that the subsequent layer does not drown in the base. If you apply the last layer with pearlescent pigments on a wet base, the effect will be completely different or completely absent.
Application of paint with nacre requires special accuracy from the painter, and the main thing is smooth and uniform movements in one direction. The speed of movement and the distance from the spray gun to the surface should also be the same maximum. If these conditions are neglected, the coating will turn out to be uneven, which will be clearly visible on the finished car even with the naked eye. The technique of movements can be mastered by first watching a video on the topic and practicing on unnecessary sections of metal.
Lacquering with a pearl effect also has its own characteristics. It can be applied both in pure form or with the addition of pearlescent pigment. Usually the first two layers of varnish are applied with pigment, and the last layer is with pure varnish.
The first layer of varnish is not diluted very much and is applied from a great distance with a large fan. The correct setting of the spray gun is important here, and the first layer of varnish should lie in an even, not thick, dry layer.
The second layer is applied with varnish of a standard consistency with the addition of pearlescent pigment. This layer is considered the main, therefore, the final result depends to a large extent on its quality. The technique of applying varnish is even more complicated than applying paint, so a beginner can’t do without a preview of the video. The last layer is applied with clear varnish without additives. Its purpose is to give even greater depth of shine and the effect of nacre.
