What is clogged my hard drive (or where the free space on the HDD disappeared) Disk analysis

in Utilities 109 Views

When your hard drive fills up, there is only one way to find out which files are consuming disk space by using special utilities and programs that display disk space. There are a number of excellent free utilities that differ mainly in the way the disk space is displayed. These disk space analyzers are basically a graphical representation of the Windows Explorer tree that includes all folders and files. There are headings above groups (or shapes), these headers represent folders, while boxes (or shapes) are files in these folders. Usually the visual sizes seem to be directly proportional to the size of the file that it represents: allowing users to quickly identify large files s, which can take up wasted space and reduce computer performance.

Space sniffer Remains No. 1 for three simple reasons, firstly, the program is free, and secondly, it seems to be the best free disk space analyzer program, and thirdly, standalone (it does not need to be installed). It took about a minute to analyze the entire disk. It can display free space and unfamiliar space. The program reports the space like this: free 160.1 GB, 119.1 GB is used. Button "Levels of detail" - 8 levels are selected. The “Go home” button will bring you back to the main display. You can drill down by double-clicking on the area.

The default colors are drive (orange), free space (green), folders (skin tone), unknown space (gray), and file (blue). Everything is changeable. You can change the contrast, border contrast and hi-light halo levels (when a file or mouse cursor is selected). There is an export function that will give you either a list of files in the selected directory or statistics about which directory it is: this does not seem to be very useful.

Software Folder-size from MindGems, tried to install it and went to their site - problematic if you are not connected to their account. It took several minutes to scan the disk. There are various units (b, Kb, MB or GB). The disk size is displayed as 122.62 GB (131.659.620.315). I tried to download a flash player to display a chart (again problematic if you are not connected). You can scan folders and shows the size as a percentage, the number of files, the number of subfolders, dates, attribvutes and owner. In the "drill down" state by double-clicking on the folder name. Clearly shows the page.sys file.

A good program, but there is no good visual display of disk space. Files can be deleted from the inside. You can search for them by folder name (not File Name). The column width can be optimized for the display. In two languages: German and English. And the scan took a minute or so to scan the hard drive, so this is not the fastest program!

Scanner simple, fast, no frills disk analysis program. It has one display window that displays a graphical tree, disk selection buttons, the "Empty Trash" button, and a button that pops up in the "Uninstall Programs" control panel. It starts scanning immediately at startup, so be prepared for a delay during startup. One unusual feature of the program is that windows cannot be resized by clicking and dragging borders. Instead, there are small ‘+’ and ‘-‘ icons next to the disk selection button, which are used to make the window gradually larger or smaller.

An outstanding graphical tree makes the disk browse by clicking on tree elements. There is no built-in file explorer in it, but by right-clicking on an element in graphic format, a menu pops up that includes a parameter to open it in Windows. The context menu also includes functions for deleting elements as well as hiding or showing items in the tree. “Rescan folder”, located to rescan from the current folder for a speedy update after making changes.

This is a separate program with one small executable file, so it is easy to transfer. It can be integrated into the context menu of Windows Explorer by running the registry installation file that comes with the program, but the REG file that indicates the location must be modified before starting it programs. Manually changing the registry, as you probably do, is not something for ordinary users. included The program includes a text help file that is worth reading to get detailed information on using the program, including known bugs and restrictions.

JDiskReport Java a disk space analysis program with an interesting set of functions for presenting analysis results. It does not require Java to be installed on a computer in order to use it, but it makes it useful on systems where you may need permission to execute other executable programs. For example, my working computer does not allow me to run programs that are not installed by the I / T group, but I can run Java applications. The installer version includes the ability to add an entry to the explorer context menu. There is a separate portable version.

After the scan is completed, the program displays folders, a view and a large, graphical panel with tabs. You can move down in the search results by selecting a folder or by clicking on the picture elements. The graphic settings window displays a pie, ring and line diagrams. The view file can be selected for display in the graphics window. Other tabs will display the text "Top 50" largest, old or new, and a graphical display of the distribution by size, date modified or file types. Right-clicking the menu includes options for opening Explorer, copying text to the clipboard and printing. Scan results can be saved and loaded, which is convenient, given that the scanning speed is not one of the program components. The help file is available in the Help menu.

The program is easy to use and has good presentation parameters. The problems are its poor scanning speed and limited ability to interact with the file system.

How to find out why a hard drive is clogged Analysis!

A very small utility (less than 1 MB) that can show you in a few minutes which folders and files take up the most space. Moreover, all this is done very clearly, and the search for the "culprit" is very fast!

Below I will show by my own example how I found a file that "took" 12 GB!

And so, after installing and running the utility, simply select the drive (s) you want to analyze, click OK. See the screenshot below.

Disk selection (system disk is also available)

Next, wait for the scan to finish (usually 2-5 minutes per 1-2 TB disk, depends on the number and size of files located on it).

After which you will see a color chart: each "rectangle" is a file, the size of the rectangle is drawn relative to the size of the file. Those. thanks to such work, you will immediately find the largest files on the disk and you can proceed to delete them.

Analysis of my disk / Clickable

For example, I had 12 GB of disk space on my disk pagefile.sys (see screen above). For those who have a problem with the same file, I will say that this is a swap file. It is used by the system automatically, but it can be limited or transferred to another disk (how to do this is described in one of my articles, I give the link below).

Not enough disk space? We remove all garbage and configure system files (including pagefile.sys) in just 5 steps -

TreeSize - the main program window

This program, unlike the previous one, does not build diagrams, however it conveniently sorts folders according to their size. Moreover, opposite to each of the folders, a certain value in percent, relative to its size, is on (the entire disk is 100%).

I note one more convenient thing: from its window you can open any of the folders (files) in Explorer. TreeSize "sees" all the files and folders on the disk (including hidden and system ones), so be careful with deleting everything and everything.

Note : It is possible to import analysis results into an HTML file.

HDD Space Analysis with Scanner

A similar utility, however, its size is even smaller. After starting, the utility will quickly scan the disk and show you a pie chart: hovering your mouse over its individual sections, you can find all the folders and files that began to take up too much space.

Please note that on the left of the program menu you can select any of the hard drives that your Windows OS sees.

Space sniffer

Note: the program does not need to be installed.

The main window of the program SpaceSniffer

SpaceSniffer differs from other similar programs in a very original interface and a slightly different approach to business (perhaps due to this it is in demand).

At the first start, the program will show you all the disks, and after you select one of them, it will start scanning. After that, you will see a clear diagram: moving along it, you will quickly find that "chopped off" excess disk space (see screen above).

The program also allows you to delete or move files directly from the window, search for files by a specific filter (for example, by their extension).

In general, the program is commendable, I recommend it for use!

DiskView Main Window

This program differs from the rest in that it works even on the relatively old Windows NT 4, 2000, XP (the new Windows 7, 8, 10 are supported, of course).

The rest of the work is similar: a disk scheme is built, using which you can easily determine which file you are occupied by certain clusters.

The program is free, Russian does not support.

JDiskReport - screen of the main program window

Great program for HDD analysis. Allows you to find a lost place in a matter of minutes! Thanks to the arch-convenient pie chart, you can immediately see which folders took up all the space.

I note that, having entered the largest folder: the chart is rebuilt, and again you see which files / folders are already taking place in it, etc.

By the way, the program has a top 50 - it will show all the largest files on the disk!

SPYGLASS - the main program window

A simple free program that allows you to quickly build charts based on the occupied space on the HDD. I note that Spyglass also includes a "locator" that detects full duplicate files.

From the program window, you can open any folder or file, or even send them to the trash (this does not work out only with system files).

Additions on the topic will be very handy!

Brief introduction and program overview

As you already understood, we will talk about such a miracle of programming thought as "WinDirStat". We have two formats for this article: video and text. You can watch and listen, but you can read.

In video format:

Softina is engaged in the fact that in a graphical way, after a small scan, it displays the entire structure of disks, folders and files, or rather, the volume occupied by these folders and files in percentage, size and graphical representation.

In order not to paint much, I’ll just show you a screenshot and, I think, everything will become clear to you right away:

One can hardly imagine something more visual and convenient as a tool for finding the missing place (although there are enough analogs of this program). By the way, even information about the last change is available, which is also extremely convenient for diagnosing what kind of file it is and how long it has been on the disk.

The program is completely free and supports the Russian language.

Download, install and use

You can download, say, at this link.

Installation is extremely simple and I will not dwell on it (it is enough to unpack the archive with something like 7-zip).

However, use is also not difficult. At the first start, you will be prompted to select the drives (all) or some individual ones.

Then it remains to wait for the process of scanning disks, as well as folders and files on them (screenshots are clickable):

After scanning, you will get a picture that I already showed you above, i.e. something like this:

Squares / rectangles / tp visually display the occupied sizes, as well as file formats (for video files, one size, for system files, another, and so on and so forth).

They clicked on a larger square - they found that it takes up more space. The list of formats and colors is indicated on the right, and disks (and their structure, i.e. folders and files), as you already understood, on the left. The scale of the squares, colors, etc., can be changed in the settings.

In general, on a sim, from the basis itself, perhaps, everything.
