Who in childhood did not dream of becoming a pilot, an astronaut, a doctor or a builder ?! But there were also those who saw themselves driving the fastest car in the world, racing at tremendous speed along a track or across endless steppes and deserts! All this is motorsport. Many are trying to get closer to their dream by upgrading their car, or, if finances allow, simply buy powerful sports cars. The problem is that we take out all the power of our car and our own ambitions on public roads and endanger others and ourselves. So how can it be safe to realize your dream and achieve high results in this difficult and dangerous technical sport?
Of course, it’s more efficient to start motorsport since childhood. The best is karting! Small noisy cars from the outside look like a strange design, not at all reminiscent of a car. But this mini-car, like a large car, has four wheels, a steering wheel, pedals and an engine. Karting will allow the child to learn to respect the technique and follow it, because without an excellent technical condition, the results map will not be.
The child grows, develops physically and control of a small but fast little car will allow him to correctly develop and adjust the vestibular apparatus, and he will learn to quickly and correctly predict the traffic situation. And, of course, any sport is disciplined both in training and in life. Karting is the first step towards great speeds and victories. The greatest and most outstanding car racers - Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher - started with this discipline!
Unfortunately, not everyone had the opportunity to start motorsport from childhood. It happens that in adulthood, for the first time, driving a car, a person becomes infected with a speed virus. And sometimes financial success allows you to realize your childhood dreams! So how do you realize your dream when opportunities arise, and desire only intensifies? There are several ways. One is to rush headlong along public roads, reveling in small victories from traffic lights, while risking their own and others' lives. The second is to come to the racing team and rent a prepared car for one of the stages of the competition and try yourself behind the wheel of a real combat vehicle in a competition.
But here, at best, you will safely reach the finish line without damaging the car, and your starting number will be at the end of the final finishing sheet, which cannot but affect your vanity. And then interest in motorsport will instantly disappear. The worst option is to crash an expensive car and, God forbid, suffer yourself! But this option is unlikely to happen, because to participate in the race you need a license from the RAF (Russian Automobile Federation), and a sports car with a price of 30,000 or more. e. no one will trust an unprepared “pilot”.
There is a third way to achieve the cherished goal. It is not as fast and cheap as the first two, but the only true one. Let's look at everything in order!
First and foremost, having studied at a driving school and having received a long-awaited driving license, we need to learn how to drive a car, no matter how strange it sounds. Unfortunately, at ordinary car courses, little time is devoted to safe driving at high speeds - this is due to the limitation of the speed of a training car when driving in the city. In addition, renting a special training ground entails additional costs for driving schools to replace rubber and wear a training vehicle. And on the streets according to traffic rules speed is limited. So, even with a significant driving experience, a person still does not have the skills and abilities how to cope with a powerful sports car to the limit of its capabilities.
In order to learn this, you need to undergo special training, that is, to increase driving skills. This can be done in special schools to improve driving skills or, as they are also called, courses of emergency training. Such schools are most often created with racing teams or former athletes who have vast experience in driving various cars in different road and weather conditions at high speeds. In Izhevsk there is such a school of higher driving skills - the Goltsov School.
Such courses are not cheap, but you will not only get the skills to quickly and safely drive a car on them, learn how to quickly make the right decision in emergency situations that can occur on public roads under any circumstances.
To become universal and not to be dependent on the vagaries of the weather, you must go through a completely summer and winter courses. In the summer course, you will learn how to move the mass of the car in order to stably maintain the trajectory without slipping, go around a sudden obstacle at high speeds, and quickly and safely go through corners of varying difficulty. Winter training will teach you not to be afraid of drifts and drifts on cars with different types of drive, and sometimes use slip to prevent a collision with an obstacle.
All classes, as a rule, are conducted on ordinary cars, which are very different from sports power, suspension settings, and it is too early to talk about sports in this case. But the physics of movement of sports and civilian cars is the same, the difference is only in speed. Therefore, only if the instructor sees that you feel great and are driving an ordinary car, it is time to move to another level.
Ring or rally?
First you have to determine the discipline in which you are going to conquer the sports Olympus. Motorsport is very diverse, how diverse are the cars and the coating on which they have to compete with each other.
Ring. Under this short word are furious speeds, a struggle with rivals, sometimes even a contact one. The hot asphalt of the track does not spare rubber and it is necessary to calculate the fuel until the next pit stop. Vivid examples of such competitions are Formula 1, DTM, NASCAR. Ring races are divided by type of car - these are different formulas, which in turn are divided into classes. Kuzova are sports cars built on the basis of production cars. "Prototypes" are sports cars that do not have serial analogues.
There are also differences in track configuration. This is a track race or, as they are also called, an “oval” (due to the fact that there are two turns in one direction on the track). A prime example is NASCAR. And racetracks with many different turns. The basic principle of conducting ring races is that all pilots will start simultaneously from their previously played qualification starting positions. All riders must overcome the same number of laps, and do it as quickly as possible. The interest lies in the fact that everyone wants to be the first, and here the struggle begins with both time and rivals. The pilot must not only competently and effectively attack, but also defend himself, which is often accompanied by contact struggle. The correct tactics for conducting pitstops (replacing tires and refueling) will help bring victory closer. The difference in the lap time between the pilots is only tenths of a second, and in Formula 1 the struggle has long been going on for hundredths and thousandths of a second. Ring racing is a very entertaining sport. The constant struggle between rivals and the convenience of observing competitions for spectators makes this discipline very popular all over the world.
Rally is a discipline that does not depend on the coverage over which the race will take place. If the circuit race is tied to weather conditions and depends on the time of the year, then the rally can be called an all-weather kind of motorsport. Rally stages take place on any surface: ice, snow, asphalt, gravel. And weather conditions will not stop the competition due to rain, for example, as is often the case in ring disciplines. The rallyist must be a generalist in order to be able to win on any surface in any weather conditions.
But a rally is not only a skillful driving experience. This is work in the carriage, because unlike the ring, where the pilot controls the car based on what he sees, the rally rides by ear. Yes, by ear! The rally car crew consists of two people: the first pilot is the driver, the second pilot is the navigator. It turns out that the success of the performance depends on the coherence of the crew.
The rally stage is at least 300 kilometers long, and the track does not repeat, and it is impossible to remember it all. Therefore, the navigator dictates to the pilot what will be after the next turn on the road book or a pre-written transcript. During the race, maintenance stops are foreseen, but the crew can call in the service only at the allotted time for this, and between services the car is repaired by the crew.
It turns out that you need not only to drive fast, but also to calculate your strength and condition of the car throughout the race, and it can last several days or even weeks - as in rally raids. The navigator must monitor not only the road, but also the time, between high-speed sections the crew must get from one point of time control to another in a strictly allotted time. Not a minute later, not a minute earlier. Advance or delay is fined by extra seconds, or even minutes. You can win all the high-speed sections, but grab fines and lose the entire race.
Another feature is that the race runs along public roads, high-speed special stages overlap during the competition. But between them, the crew moves according to the rules of the road, and any violation is strictly punished.
Rally is divided into several disciplines: classic rally and rally raids. A classic rally is a race that takes place over several days, and the crew is given the opportunity to drive along the route and record a transcript. Therefore, the speed of the race is very high (if the crew is harmonious). Rally-raids are multi-day races where the crew has to overcome thousands of kilometers a day, and most of them through deserted areas where a navigation error or breakdown can put an end to the entire race.
Such multi-day marathons are the most difficult competitions, where the endurance and coordination of the crew, the level of training of the equipment are checked. The most famous race is the Dakar.
A very interesting and entertaining discipline is cross (or rally cross). A closed track with many turns and jumps, with varying coverage and elevations, where the rider has to deal not only with time, but also with rivals. Cross is a contact sport, and not everyone gets to the finish line. The track is located in such a way that most of the turns are visible and spectators can follow the progress of the race without leaving the stands. Cars that can be used in cross-country are so diverse that they can only be compared with rally raids with the number of classes. Starting from the small “Oka” for juniors and ending with huge ZIL or GAZ trucks. This makes the cross one of the most spectacular disciplines in motorsport.
Each discipline is interesting and fascinating in its own way. If you compare motorsports to music, then the ring racing is similar to the classic: everything is painted according to the notes, each turn, the ideal entry point and braking is unchanged, the fast trajectory is one. The rally also has its own notes - this is a transcript or road book, but the cover is changing. It began to rain, snow, or, conversely, a sharp warming turned the track into a snowy "mess", the soft soil was smashed to such an extent that the car crawls on the bottom of a deep rut. But the race continues, and the crew has to improvise, adapt to the track and weather conditions, and improvisation is jazz. Of course, the choice is yours. But if you do not know what to stop at, remember that there is always the opportunity to try yourself in another discipline. The main thing to start!
Problems of racing sports in Russia
Racing has always attracted people. This is a spectacular event, excitement, adrenaline, extreme. Today, amateurs and professionals organize races, and competitions can take place not only in cars, but also in water, air transport and even home-made transport. But we will dwell on the competition among cars. If you are a parent of the future star of auto tracks or an adult man who wants to change his life, then for sure you constantly have many questions, for example, about how to become a racer. And all these questions are far from groundless, because the novice racer really does not know where to go and where to get the necessary skills.
In our country there are not many places where you can master this sports craft. In cities with a population of up to 500,000 people, the infrastructure for such events is completely absent. For this reason, informal and semi-basement communities arise, whose members proudly call themselves street racers. They buy cheap domestic cars for themselves, tune them and to the loud music and screech of brakes disturb the sleep of residents of the sleeping areas of their towns.
To say that it is illegal is not enough. This is very dangerous, and not only for irresponsible "racers" (by the way, these people have nothing to do with motor sports). As a rule, their cars are not in perfect condition, they themselves often participate in races while intoxicated, and the risk of getting into a fatal accident or becoming the culprit is more than high. Therefore, here you need to remember once and for all: illegal street racing is illegal, dangerous and not about sports. But on how to become a professional racer in Russia, let's talk right now.
Everyone who is looking for an answer to the question of how to become a Formula racer, and plans to get behind the wheel of a racing car, must understand that this is not a toy, this is a real sport, a profession. It is impossible to be a racer on Saturdays twice a month, a completely different approach is needed here. And since we consider this sphere of human activity as a profession, it should be said about its features.
The main event in the life of the rider is competition. He prepares for them for a long time, carefully and responsibly. To be an athlete, it’s not enough to buy a used “seven” and completely tint it - to participate in professional competitions you will need a special car (for rally, formula and off-road racing, you need different configurations of cars). And this is a very serious expense item. Every day you need to spend a lot of time on sports tracks, and this is the cost of their rent, gasoline, equipment, etc. In addition, you should have a personal trainer, mentor who can work with you both individually and as part of a small group of like-minded people. All this suggests that the participants in the races are not poor people, you must have considerable means in order to come to this sport. Finally, there are still physical and moral qualities that anyone who drives a sports car must possess.
A car is a source of increased danger. The driver actually should be part of his iron horse, its continuation, to feel its size. Some athletes admit that they are talking with their cars, they feel their mood and live as if it is not just an engine and an iron case, but a real partner and comrade. So racing is a whole philosophy, a way of life that requires a lot of time, money and special moral qualities.
Pros of the profession
Few people think about the pros and cons of the profession of a pilot of a racing car. It is not enough to find out what it takes to become a racer, it is important to weigh the pros and cons. Some dreamers remain dreamers when they find out how much needs to be done and what path they need to go before participating in the first competitions in their lives.
But for starters, the positive, namely the pros of the profession of the rider. Most often people who are in love with cars come to this sport. Often existing athletes outside their driver's seat work in a field close to racing. Someone is engaged in teaching, automotive journalism, others work at automobile presentations, exhibitions, or even at least in car dealerships. One way or another, there are no “strangers” here.
The advantages of such a lifestyle and profession as a whole include, of course, prestige. If you manage to break through to the top of racing sports and lead the tops of the most successful racers, then consider that you have earned a comfortable old age for both yourself and your children. Secondly, they become pilots for the adrenaline rush. Racing is not just excitement and struggle, but also a great danger. Risk and extreme make people throw everything and press the gas pedal to the limit.
Cons of the profession
However, not everything is so smooth. The life of a rider is a constant stress. The very risk, adrenaline and life threat that can be attributed to the pluses is also a minus. There is a risk of not just getting into an accident, but also dying in it or remaining disabled for the rest of your life. There are many examples when successful athletes were left without legs, arms or even went to another world after a terrible accident. In addition, the king (and in our case, the rider) makes the retinue.
Sponsors, crew, mechanics, a club - all these people are behind the athlete and make it possible for him to participate in competitions. Expensive contracts are concluded, the burden of responsibility at some point begins to literally put pressure on the pilot of the sports car. However, this story is not only about motorsport, such a situation is inherent in any large professional sport. Thus, if your goal is amateur races, then there is less responsibility, but you need to understand that it will never completely disappear.
Qualities required by the rider
Anyone who decides to engage in motorsport professionally should undergo a medical examination regularly. There are no people with any kind of disease here, your cardiovascular and nervous systems must be in perfect order. Among the qualities that are necessary for any rider, one can note the speed of reaction, the ability to take risks and put other people at risk, the ability to negotiate, to convince sponsors and the crew of their confidence and victory, sociability. Good intuition, coordination of movements, physical and psychological endurance, the ability to quickly make an important decision, the ability to analyze, have good eyesight, the so-called "eye" will not be out of place.
It is also important to have critical and strategic thinking, the ability to quickly think and analyze the situation, feel the car and be able to predict the development of events. In addition, you need to perfectly understand the device of the car, be able to fix the damage yourself.
Workplace for the rider
As for the places of work, there are not so many of them. Indeed, this is a specific profession, especially for our country. To learn about how to become a racer is only half the battle. But where then get settled? If we consider racing as a professional hobby, then this is not such a hot issue. However, if you really decided to go into the profession “with your head”, then you can try to find yourself in sports clubs, motor sports organizations (you can be not just an athlete, but also a qualified trainer), sports sections. In the end, you can try to create your own school or your own sports club in your hometown and make a business that brings a steady income out of your favorite business.
Where to learn to racers
How to become a professional racer In fact, the only way is to come to a sports school or section. There is the possibility of both individual lessons and group courses in your age group. The problem is that in most cities of Russia there are no specialized institutions that can help get a professional racer license. The option to "go abroad" is quite possible, but in this case you will either have to live in two countries or leave your homeland forever. In addition, you need to be fluent in a foreign language and have enough funds to achieve the goal. Therefore, it is best to find an option within your home country, fortunately, today it is not so difficult to do.
Motorsport Center in Russia
The main center of all the racers of our country is not in Moscow and not in St. Petersburg, but in Tatarstan. Yes, indeed, local authorities pay great attention to racing in the region. There is an excellent modern circuit with a high-class infrastructure that meets all international standards. There is also the best rally-cross track in Europe, a fairly large ring track.
Many clubs, sections and schools are all located in Kazan and around the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. Therefore, special problems in mastering this craft should not arise, although it must be recognized that developing in the classical direction is not as difficult as becoming a rally driver in Russia. Recently, an autodrome has also been developing in Sochi and Krasnoyarsk, there is a small highway in the suburbs. Alas, this ends the racing infrastructure in Russia, which, on the other hand, gives hope for the development of this area in the near future.
Thus, anyone can become a pilot of a racing car in Russia. It is better, of course, to begin your sports career from childhood or adolescence, but if you are 30 and you decide to change your life, then no one will forbid you to do this. In Russia, Tatarstan is the only place where you can become a sports racer. They can teach anyone how to become a racer, but provided that the person has carefully thought out, weighed everything and is ready for the difficulties that will arise in the way of becoming each professional athlete.
European firms began building racing cars after 1900. Today, there are a large number of different racing cars. According to engine displacement and mass, racing cars are divided into groups - racing formulas: Formula 1 (3 liters, less than 500 kg), Formula 2 (up to 1.6 liters, less than 450 kg), Formula 3 (up to 1 liter, less than 400 kg). The most famous racing car companies are Lotus (UK), Porsche (Germany), Ford (USA).
Ability to take risks, speed of reaction, developed spatial imagination, distribution of attention, flexibility of thinking, high noise immunity, self-confidence, good coordination of movements, physical endurance, ability to analyze and predict the development of the situation, mental and emotional stability, perseverance and perseverance, desire for victory, excellent health, sharp eyesight, good eye, excellent concentration.
Famous race car drivers
In Formula 1, the cars have great speed, and much attention is paid to the safety of the race driver. Before each race, the condition of the rider and the car is checked. A Formula 1 competitor must wear a special Sparco jumpsuit that protects him from fire for 14 seconds. One of the best race car drivers in the world is Lewis Hamilton, a British race car driver who plays on the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team. He became the youngest world champion in the history of Formula 1 at the age of 23. So far, no one has been able to achieve its result.
Motorsport in Russia
At the highest level, motorsport is located in Tatarstan - the entire leadership of the republic is engaged in motorsport. There is a chic race track, the best rally-cross track in Europe, now the construction of the ring track is almost completed. Tatarstan is a real haven of motor sports, the only one in the whole of Russia. In the suburbs there is only one circuit - Myachkovo. There is still a small track in Krasnoyarsk, but it is too far from Moscow. Such a deplorable situation in Russian motorsport is explained by the fact that for the organizers it is unprofitable to carry out car races, it is unprofitable, they have a small margin. Most often it is impossible to conduct a competition without outside help, without additional sponsorship. There is a serious problem in motorsport developers or promoters. In Russia there is no track for conducting the stages of “Formula 1”, at one time there was no investor who was ready to invest a lot of money into it. Such a huge professional race track would give impetus to motorsport in Russia.
Motorsport in America
In America, the motorsport industry is superbly developed. The races from the NASCAR series are incredibly popular - 36 stages a year, 40 cars at the start, 6 cameras are installed on each car, which “water” the entire track in real time. This means: 240 cameras on cars, plus the same amount throughout the track. About 150 thousand spectators at each race. Tens of millions of viewers on television screens watching this series. Races go three days in a row: Friday, Saturday, Sunday. It is a professional, serious and extremely profitable industry.
