Ciliate gecko bananoe (Correlophus ciliatus) - For a long time was considered a very rare species of gecko from the genus Rhacodactylus (amended by the genus Correlophus) Now actively distributed among breeders. Endemic of the island of New Caledonia. Body color varies, and may be gray, brown, green, pale yellow and red-red. It lives in the upper tier of rain forests. Active at night and twilight. The words “ciliated” or “comb” appeared in the name of the gecko because of a peculiar serrated row of spikes that are located along the entire length of the back of the lizard. Both males and females average 16-18 cm long, with a tail. They become sexually mature at the age of 15 to 18 months, with a weight of 35-45 grams. With good maintenance, they can live up to 8-15 years.

It was considered extinct for some time before being reopened in 1994. Under the Washington Convention, it is planned to add it to the list of protected species, along with other representatives of the same genus.

There are many opinions why "bananoe". Still, I am of the opinion that this gecko was found on banana palms.

Living in nature

Banana-eaten geckos endemic to the islands of New Caledonia. There are three populations, one on and around Isle of Pines, and two on Grande Terre. One of these populations lives along the Blue River, the other further to the north of the island, at Mount Dzumac. Woody night view. It was considered extinct, however, was discovered in 1994.

Content

Young banana eaters are best kept in plastic terrariums with a volume of 50 liters or more, with coverslip. Adults need a 100 liter or more terrarium, again, covered with glass. For a couple, the minimum size of the terrarium is 40cm x 40cm x 60 cm. You need to keep one male and several females, you can’t keep a couple of males together, as they will fight.

Characteristic

Banana-eaten geckos live on the islands of New Caledonia. These islands are located in the tropical zone of the Pacific Ocean, between Australia, Vanuatu and Fiji. This species of lizards was considered extinct until 1994, since scientists could not find it on the islands of Caledonia.

But at the end of the last century, banana-eaters were discovered, and today they are the most popular geckos living in private terrariums. In the wild, ciliate (crested) geckos live in tropical rainforests, near shallow rivers or other bodies of water.

Due to their successful body structure, they lead a woody lifestyle. The combed banana-eaters perfectly adapt in terrariums, arranged according to the type of natural tropical forests, therefore, breeders never have problems in maintenance and care. Ciliated banana-eaters, like many other species of lizards, are able to throw their tail at the sight of an impending threat. But their tail never grows again, unlike other lizards. Despite this, banana-eaters feel great even without a tail, which can be called an extra organ.

Comb geckos are a little shy creatures that can do absolutely no harm to humans. In order for the domesticated lizard to cease to fear people, it will take a considerable share of effort.

Heating and lighting

The body temperature of reptiles depends on the ambient temperature, so it is important to maintain comfortable conditions in the terrarium. A thermometer is required, and preferably two, in different corners of the terrarium.

Banana-eaten geckos love temperatures of 22-27 C throughout the day. At night, it can drop to 22-24C. To create this temperature, it is best to use special reptile lamps. Other heaters do not fit well, since ciliary geckos spend a lot of time at height, and the heater at the bottom of the terrarium does not heat them.

The lamp is placed in one corner of the terrarium, the second is left cooler so that the gecko can choose a comfortable temperature. The length of daylight is 12 hours; at night the lamps are turned off. As for ultraviolet lamps, you can do without them if you give extra food with vitamin D3.

Geckos spend most of their lives above ground, so the choice is not fundamental. The most practical are special reptile rugs or just paper. If you plan to plant plants, you can use the land mixed with coconut.

Banana-eaten geckos in nature live on trees, and similar conditions must be ensured in captivity. To do this, add branches, driftwood, large stones to the terrarium - in general, everything that they can climb on.

However, it is also not necessary to clutter it, leave enough space. You can also plant live plants, which in combination with snags creates a magnificent, natural look. It can be ficus or dracaena.

Content Features

In order for the gecko-banana-eater to feel comfortable, it is necessary to create conditions as close as possible to the conditions of a tropical island, which is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

For this type of gecko, you should buy a certain type of terrarium. The best is vertical, the dimensions of which should not be smaller than 50x30x50 cm (if the content is intended to contain no more than two individuals). The terrarium should be nicely equipped with various branches, snags and bark, which will serve as a shelter for the banana-eater. Also in the terrarium you can make various shelves and a hinged house.

As decorations, the walls of the terrarium can be covered with a beautiful background, for example, pieces of cork oak. Also, at the place of residence of the ciliary bananoe, you can plant non-toxic plants (orchid, ficus, begonias) or arrange an artificial tropical forest there.

And we should not forget that in the terrarium there should be a drinking bowl and a place for eating.

The gecko banana-eater is an omnivorous animal. He uses both animal and plant foods, but due to the peculiarities of the structure of the jaw, he is not able to swallow large pieces. Ciliated gecko is a big fan of bananas, which is why it was given such a name.

In a terrarium, you need to feed such a lizard with the following products:

  • cricket or zoobus (the first option is preferable due to the small size),
  • cockroaches that are designed to feed lizards,
  • bananas and other tropical fruits, cut into small pieces,
  • cereals and mashed potatoes based on fruit combinations.

It should be noted that plant and animal food should be given in equal proportions to a banana-eater. However, it often happens that comb geckos refuse tropical fruits or prefer to eat only bananas.

It will not work to force them to eat fruit, but they will never give up the opportunity to enjoy crickets. For normal growth, development and maintenance of all necessary vital functions, banana-eaten geckos need a lot of vitamins and minerals, in particular, vitamin B3 and calcium. Vitamin B3 contributes to the normal absorption of calcium, but if the terrarium is illuminated with ultraviolet light, then the need for this vitamin is sharply reduced. The most preferred feeding option is the use of tweezers, with which you can control the dosage of the daily diet.

If soil is used in the terrarium, then crickets should not be put in the feeders, as they will scatter along all corners of the lizard’s dwelling, and the latter during the hunt can swallow a certain amount of soil, after which gastrointestinal blockage may occur.

Water and air humidity

There should always be water in the terrarium, plus air humidity of at least 50%, and preferably 70%. If the air is dry, then the terrarium is carefully sprayed from the spray gun, or an irrigation system is installed. Humidity should not be checked by eye, but with a hygrometer, since they are in pet stores.

Temperature mode

Banana-eaten geckos are cold-blooded animals whose body temperature depends on weather conditions. In the home terrarium, it is necessary to create conditions that would be as close as possible to the weather conditions of the islands of New Caledonia. It is recommended to place several thermometers in different corners in the terrarium and try to adhere to a temperature of + 25-27 ° С in the daytime, + 22-24 ° С - at night.

It is important to understand that banana eaters tend to spend a large amount of time in the upper corners of the terrarium, so lower heaters are not suitable for these amphibians.

It is best to purchase a special lamp for reptiles and place it in any one corner so that the temperature throughout the entire terrarium is slightly different. So the gecko will be able to choose the most comfortable conditions for himself. The use of ultraviolet installations is not necessary if you give the lizards a lot of vitamin B3 with food. It should also be noted that the duration of daylight hours should be about 12 hours.

In the rainforests of New Caledonia, where ciliate geckos live, the humidity is always slightly elevated. In a terrarium with a pet, humidity should always be kept within 60-75%. For this, it is necessary to spray the walls and plants with cool water twice a day.

You can also plant several live plants that will maintain constant humidity. And do not forget to leave the gecko with water in the drinker, as it will lick droplets of liquid from the walls of the terrarium.

The soil in the life of banana-eaters does not play a particularly important role, since these amphibians spend a large amount of time on various branches or shelves.

But if you want to plant various exotic plants in the terrarium, you can purchase a special soil mixture into which coconut flakes will be added. If you do not have the opportunity to buy soil in the store, then you can prepare it yourself.

To do this, you need to take peat and chernozem in equal proportions, and sprinkle everything on top with mulch of tree bark. Also, one should not forget about the different decorations in the form of branches and snags, which the comb gecko loves. By the way, instead of soil, you can use ordinary newsprint or special rugs for reptiles.

Care and handling

In nature, ciliary banana-eaten geckos lose their tails and live with a short stump. We can say that for an adult gecko this is a normal state. However, in captivity you want to have the most spectacular animal, so you need to handle it carefully, do not grab the tail!

Acquired geckos, in general, do not bother a couple of weeks, or more. Let them get comfortable and start eating normally. When you start to pick it up, do not hold it for more than 5 minutes at first. This is especially true for babies, they are very sensitive and fragile. Banana-eaters do not bite much, tweaked and let go.

Commercial, artificial feed ciliary geckos eat well, and this is the easiest way to give them complete feeds. In addition, crickets and other large insects (grasshoppers, locusts, flour worms, cockroaches) can be given.

In addition, they excite a hunting instinct in them. Any insect must be smaller than the distance between the eyes of the gecko, otherwise it will not swallow it. You need to feed two to three times a week, it is advisable to add multivitamins and vitamin D3.

Juveniles can be fed every day, and adults no more than three times a week. Better feed at sunset.

If artificial feeds for some reason do not suit you, then you can give banana-eaters insects and fruits, although such feeding is more difficult to balance.

We have already found out about insects, and as for plant foods, as you can guess from the name they like bananas, peaches, nectarines, apricots, papaya, mangoes.

Molting period

Shedding processes in banana-eating geckos occur regularly (every 30-35 days). During this period, your lizard may seem less active, it will be characterized by lethargy and loss of strength. The skin will acquire a gray dull hue, after which it will peel off. It may happen that the gecko eats it, but there is no danger to its health.

During molting, the fact that the reptile owner needs to maintain high air humidity in the terrarium (at least 70%) remains important. If this rule is not observed, then the lizard may not lose all the skin; the pieces will remain near the eyes and between the fingers.

In the future, this can lead to the death of the tail and fingers. In order to prevent this, it is necessary to place the pet in warm water (about + 28 ° C) for half an hour, and then use the tweezers to remove the dead sections of the epidermis.

Breeding

The period of puberty in banana-eating geckos comes after a year of age. It is important to note that males acquire puberty much earlier than females. Experts recommend that only females that have reached the age of two are put on mating.

In one cage, several females and one male should be placed, and after sexual intercourse, the females should be immediately planted, since the male can harm them.

After some time, the female will lay eggs and bury them in the ground. Small reptiles will appear only after 72-76 days. It should be borne in mind that the temperature of the terrarium throughout the entire incubation period should be at least + 27 ° C.

Now you know how to keep a banana-eating gecko at home. There are no particular difficulties in this process, you should only carefully monitor the temperature, humidity and diet of the pet.

Animal description

Gecko banana-eater in its natural habitat is found on the islands of New Caledonia and lives on trees. In captivity, these lizards are unpretentious in maintenance and look great in aquariums that emit nature. The gecko banana-eater is perfect for beginner breeders, it is interesting to observe it, it is easy to feed, and even a child will cope with the care.

The size of the lizard is small, the adult reaches a length of 10 to 20 cm. Together with the tail, which, by the way, the lizard can drop at the moment of danger. You need to be very careful with this type of gecko, since the tail of the lizard of this species no longer grows.

The weight of the animal is in the range of 30-50 grams, and the life expectancy in captivity with good care can be from 15 to 20 years.

What to feed

How to feed a banana-eater gecko at home is not a difficult question. To get started, buy specialized lizard food at pet stores - this is one of the easiest ways to feed your pet. When feeding in this way, your pet will receive all the necessary vitamins.

You can diversify the nutrition of a gecko with the help of crickets, grasshoppers, locusts, flour worms and cockroaches. Note! The size of the insect for feeding should be less than the distance between the eyes of your pet. This is due to the fact that it will be quite difficult for a gecko to swallow a large individual entirely.

An adult banana-eater gecko needs to be fed two to three times a week, it is best to feed cubs up to a year every day.
