Perhaps, it is quite natural that a tourist who loves outdoor activities and does not have much free time will sooner or later be forced to increase the range and intensity of the route for the same time period. And here you involuntarily think about moving into some other category, to which the concept is closer sport tourism.

What is sports tourism from an official point of view?

Sports tourism - this is a sport based on competition on routes (a sports trip), including overcoming obstacles categorized by difficulty in the natural environment (roads and paths with different surfaces and off-road, crossings, passes, peaks, rapids, canyons, caves, waterways etc.), and at distances laid in the natural environment and on artificial terrain.

The sport type "Sports Tourism" is included in the All-Russian Register of Sports. It is subdivided into: pedestrian, mountain, water, ski, speleo, bicycle, sailing, avtomoto, equestrian and their combinations. According to its goals, it can have a sports, cognitive, educational, research, environmental focus and their combination.

The most complete and sensible work on this topic can be found here, however, the assessment of the categorization of tourist routes is unacceptable for the vast majority of lovers of an active lifestyle and simply amateur tourists who are not able to make mountain climbing and rafting along mountain rivers.

So, for example, a hiking route of the first (easiest) category of difficulty is considered to be a distance of at least 130 km, with a duration of at least 6 days. You have to agree that it’s not realistic to manage 130 km in two days off and meet 6 days at the same time, which means that we are not destined to engage in “full-fledged” sports tourism, and to receive the coveted “Tourist of Russia” badge.

As a result, we will leave the existing classification of the Federation of Sports Tourism for a narrow circle of favorites, and try to find a sports component in independent activity, because a tourist is not necessarily the one who sits in the raft for the company and is taken along the mountain river, and not the one who goes 130 km slowly for two weeks, without a backpack, which will be delivered by a provision vehicle.

A tourist, or a traveler, is, first of all, a vocation, and you can find yourself and confirm your intentions anywhere in the neighboring area, going on foot thirty-kilometer march throw with a fifteen kilogram backpack in 24 hours, or in an alloy for some some forest river where impassable blockages await every two hundred meters. Sports tourism is quite possible to engage in and somewhere not far from the cottage - there would be a desire to give everything one hundred percent!

And so, we will consider the term "sports tourism"in relation to more accessible for a simple Russian inhabitant, as active way of moving in space with a greater than usual stress.

2. How to start sports tourism?

So how start sports tourism? Sports tourism should start to be practiced only after several trips have been completed and the first tourist skills have been mastered, a set of the most necessary equipment has been acquired, the optimal route distances and load have been determined for the body. But the most important thing is understanding why is this necessary and is it worth continuing further. It is the last two questions that you should ask yourself before you engage in sports tourism, increase the load, because the moral component often becomes the only determining successful outcome of an event. Why?

The fact is that when entering a route approaching the limits of your capabilities in complexity, and even worse - clearly surpassing them, you may encounter such unforeseen obstacles that only your perseverance, and not physical endurance, can bring you to the finish point, where some transport will pick you up and take you home.

It often happens that grandiose plans collapse due to unaccounted circumstances, and in order to get out of the dense forest, or to swim to a place where vehicles can pick you up, you have to stay awake at night and row, or drag along with heavy equipment for many kilometers. In such a situation, the slightest panic or weakness of spirit can not only spoil the whole impression and permanently turn you away from such events, but also threaten that you do not have time to return home in time. The latter is the lesser of all evils. Worse - if it will be the only transport from this area.

When you clearly understand that tourism attracts you, that you would like not only to study the world around you, but also to give the body physical activity that is so lacking for us in the modern mechanized world, to discover the hidden reserves of the body, increase endurance and reach new heights in self-knowledge - then you will be ready.

Moral readiness, self-motivation - these are the main keys to any type of activity. Everything else will come gradually with experience.

3. Preparation

In order to go in for sports tourism and try to test your strength and endurance, nothing special is needed: you do not need to have any muscular build-up or endurance of the Spetsazaz. You are not required to be a superman at all. One clear intention is enough.

What is intention? First of all, in a clear understanding that time in our lives is sorely lacking, and if you work five days a week (and most ordinary Russians have such a schedule, plus business chores), then you should be in time in the remaining two days visit as large places as possible: walk, swim or drive as fast as possible, see as many as possible. Moreover, with time you will be pulled further and further to open new horizons of knowledge. And more and more time will be spent on the road, and less and less on the event itself.

It is at this moment that the understanding comes that you need to use every moment of free time and be as dynamic as possible. When a couple of times due to your sluggishness or lack of time you do not have time to go the selected route, then you will gradually neglect the rest, comfort, and begin to squeeze all the juices out of yourself. That's when you mature for sports tourism.

You will not have much to worry about when to get up in order to go on the road, when to set up camp, because you will no longer be guided by the desire to relax, but by the need to get up, for example, as close to the finish line as possible, so that the next day you can be guaranteed to get to transport, or to see as many attractions as possible. The desire to achieve a result will be the motivating beginning that will make you rise from the break before you rest, and stop for snacks - as rarely as possible. By the way, unexpected obstacles are often a strong motivating factor, which greatly slows down the movement, but which make you take your fist and accelerate.

The only thing that can be attributed to preparation in this case is the frequency of events: the more often you go on a route, the longer it becomes, the more your body trains, physical endurance increases, and along with it, mental strength. Undoubtedly, at first (it is possible that later) you will experience pain from worn legs, aching shoulders from a backpack, etc., but over time all this will be less noticeable. In addition, you yourself will gain experience on how to avoid ailments. Listen to your body - it will tell you how to correctly calculate the load, maintain a pace, show where your strengths are, and where are weak and vulnerable sides. The main thing is not to start abruptly, but to learn your abilities gradually.

Do not listen to those who will talk about some difficult and incredible methods of endurance training, or call for the search for some instructors - your regular practice will become the best instructor. Tested on yourself!

4. Equipment

Sooner or later, but the question of finding a more convenient and functional storage will arise before you. To a greater extent - clothes and shoes. The main requirement for equipment is the minimum weight with more functionality. It is already worth considering that the equipment is as light as possible (especially when it comes to hiking), compact. It is necessary to exclude all unnecessary things that can be dispensed with (fishing rods, for example, a tripod, sleeping bag, if you can take some kind of warm clothes). The fewer things, the faster to get something out of a backpack, or pack. Sometimes it’s even better to take fewer things, but use thermal underwear, or take cover instead of a sleeping bag with a raincoat that holds heat well and at the same time protect it from rain, or with warm clothes (in autumn you can take a winter suit on a holofiber instead of a sleeping bag: dress in a warmer evening and night you can sleep in it).

Often the question arises of buying new or additional equipment for specific tasks. For example, if you plan to go camping alone, then you should think about buying a single or double tent in your two- or three-seater tent, or in good weather take a simple, lightweight Chinese tent without an awning, which only increases weight. If you are planning a bike trip, then you must abandon the shoulder bag in favor of the bike backpack mounted on the trunk.

Often the question arises of buying a more comfortable backpack. But more work is needed on clothing and clothing: often correctly selected clothes make you feel comfortable even in bad weather conditions, and shoes protect your feet from corns, which can occur at distances of more than 20 km.

5. Food

The question of the quantity and quality of products will not bypass you and will become one of the most important. How many mines were broken around the topic "how much to take food with you on a camping trip," however, more often than not, it is often taken. And do not think about the fact that if you decide to swim in the water or ride a bicycle, then this will not affect you, because you don’t have to drag the surplus on yourself: often you still have to get to the water, and on the forest rivers also rubble rubble with this mass, and the bike may have to be pulled out or pushed on the sticky sand somewhere.

A definite advice: take food as little as possible. You can plan routes in such a way as to go lightly, and produce products in stores along the route. Practice shows that in the way hunger is not felt. But I want to drink, and it is better to stock up on water. Over time, you yourself can establish an optimal diet for yourself, or use the description of the diet in our trips.
